Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the surgical management of patients with vaginal abnormalities. Retrospective analysis of 62 patients with vaginal developmental abnormalities treated surgically at Istanbul University, Cerrahpasa Medical Faculty, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, between years 1974 - 2005 was done. 31 patients with vaginal atresia,Rokitansky - Küster - Hauser Syndrome (RKH syndrome) underwent Mc Indoe operation, 16 patients with transverse vaginal septum underwent septum resection, 7 patients with hymen imperforatus underwent hymenotomy, 4 patients with vaginal ring underwent ring excision, 2 patients with vaginal and cervical atresia underwent trachelovestibulostomy and 2 patients with Gartner cysts underwent cystectomy. It is important to diagnose vaginal developmental abnormalities during the adolescent period. Early treatment is crucial for the normal psychosexual development and preservation of the reproductive function. Preoperative evaluation of the possible accompanying anomalies is also important in order to plan the surgical procedure and to prevent any complications.
