Abstract
Objectives: Acute herpes zoster associated pain is an important risk factor for postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). Anticonvulsants, antidepressants and opioids are shown to be effective in prevention of PHN. But, the effects of these drugs in acute herpetic pain and in the prevention of PHN are not known. In this study, the efficacy of gabapentine and gabapentine tramadol combination was compared in acute herpetic pain and in the prevention of PHN. Methods: 39 patients with acute herpes zoster pain (during 4th week of the disease) taken antiviral treatments were randomized to two groups. In group G, gabapentine was started as 300-900 mg/day gradually titrated in three days and continued on maximum 3600 mg/day in case. In group GT, tramadol together with gabapentine (started as same in group G) was started as 50-150 mg/day and titrated to maximum 400 mg/day in case and stopped when VAS
