Abstract

Aristotle, in the De Anima divided the soul into three types such as the nutritive soul, the sensible soul, and the rational soul. This classification was moved into Islamic thought and it accepted as it was. Muslim thinkers’ theories on the soul however considerably differentiate from Aristotle’s. The theory has not only been enriched in the Islamic Philosophy, but it has become indispensable reference point in the subjects such as knowledge, prophethood, hereafter in the studies of philosophers, theologians and sufis. Ibn Sīnā gave more importance to the soul than the previous Muslim Peripatetics. He did not accept that souls have an individual essence when they were originated. He acknowledges that souls in the beginning had only species essence as nutritive, sensible and rational. However, in that case, the question of how souls gain their personal identities or individualities emerges as a question. In this study, I tried to examine the issue according to Ibn Sīnā and Abū al-Barakāt al-Bagdādī who significantly differed from him. By doing so, I tried to determine the reasons and consequences of Abū al-Barakāt al-Bagdādī’s rejection the species essence of souls while Ibn Sīnā accepts it. Furthermore, what are the factors of having individual identities in both philosophers was the other issue addressed here.
