Abstract

Objective: A possible association between ankylosing spondylilis and multiple sclerosis has been suggested. The aim of this study was to evaluate the sacroiliitis in multiple sclerosis patients. Study design: Retrospective study Materials & methods: Forty-three patients (15 male and 28 female) with multiple sclerosis included in this study. Results: The mean age was 38.9 ± 10.1 years. The mean duration of disease was 7.5 ±6.2 years. All the patients who were followed up by multiple sclerosis diagnosis were evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging. Eight (18.6 %) of multiple sclerosis patients had bilateral sacroiliitis. One of the patients was female and she had ankylosing spondylilis. Sacroiliitis was determined in three patients with plain radiography. Sacroiliilis was diagnosed in 5 (17.9 %) of the female patients (20%) and 3 of male patients (p= 0.1). There were no statistically significant difference between the ages of multiple sclerosis onset, durations of the disease ami the Hxpanded Disability Status Scale scores of patients with sacroiliitis and patients whose sacroiliac joint findings were normal. Conclusion:! he results of these study showed that sacroiliilis could be seen in multiple sclerosis patients.
