Abstract

Vocational education has been carried out under the responsibility of the parents for a long time. After the changing of some social circumstances vocational education has been given to some institutions. The education in these institutions are named as “Apprentice training”. Within the time, the apprentice training has become insufficient depending on the changes in science and technology and the needs of the society. As a result, new studies have been done to improve the vocational education except from the apprentice training. In this context, new institutions were established in the second half of the century for the training in the field of industry, domestic economy, trade and agriculture. Among these institutions, Girls’ Vocational schools were established to train girls, have them ready for the life and have them get a job easily. Girls' Industry Institutions were established within the country for the first time in Turkish history to train girls and to make them individuals that contribute to the development of the country. For the first time. Girls’ Vocational Schools were established in Ruscuk in 1865 by Mithat Pasha to train girls as individuals who contribute to the society. Then, these schools were converted into Girls' Institutions in the Republic period. The number of these schools reached 11 which were established in different cities. These schools were first established in three cities Adana, İstanbul and Ankara in 1927-1928. In following years, the number of these schools reached eleven that were established in other cities. It has been planned that the Turkish Women were trained to become a mother and a person who could work in all layers of the society. In these schools, the girls were trained in accordance with the western educational systems in subjects such as to manage home and kitchen, to acquire good manners and to dress well. These schools became the keystone for the modernization of Turkey in those years and contribute to the changes in the society. In this study, the contribution of these schools to the Turkish modernization is mentioned.
