Abstract
Rhodes Island, the center of commerce and culture and one of the most important bases in the Aegean Sea throughout the history, came under the Ottoman domination in the 16th century. These features of the island continued during the Ottoman period and different religions and cultures had generally lived there in peace. However, because of the conquest of Rhodes and Dodecanese by Italy during the Tripoli War, the denial to return them to Turkey as promised in the Treaty of Ouchy and the wish of Greece to dominate the islands, Rhodes and the Dodecanese had become an issue between the three states for a long time. With the establishment of Fascist Regime by Benito Mussolini in Italy in 1922, the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas gained importance, so in this period Italy aimed to prove supremacy on this triangle over the islands. Although they did not have any important influence on the government affairs, King Vittorio Emanuele III and his family travelled to Rhodes and Dodecanese in 1929. News were reflected in the European press about this visit and its importance. In this research, the travel of Italian King and his family and the reflections were examined through selected news and articles.
