Abstract
After signing the Armistice of Moudros on October 30, 1918, Turks, led by Mustafa Kemal, fought against the aggressive imperialist powers under extremely hard conditions, gained their independence, and saved the country from invasion. It should be recalled that the aforementioned independence war was fought with limited means as the Ottoman Empire had excessive amounts of foreign debt before going into the World War I. The Republic of 1923, that accomplished a vast social transformation, was founded under these circumstances as well. Mustafa Kemal, as a leader who experienced poverty at first hand in his life and knew the importance of economic independence of a nation, paid special attention to economy not only during the foundation period but also during the war of independence. In this article, the goal of “national economy” that was wished to be achieved during the first few years of the Republic and the economic models that were practised gradually were examined. Mustafa Kemal’s enthusiasm of production that was reflected in the honour books of production factories of that time period was studied throughly in the light of his speecches and statements.
