Abstract

After the Turkish War of Independence, various attemps were launched to build the monuments and statues of Mustafa Kemal Pasha. In order to preserve its former importance and to strengthen its relations with the leader of the struggle, Istanbul has taken action more quickly than other cities. Thus, as a result of the vigorous efforts carried out by the city's local authorities and administrators, Istanbul has gained the distinction of being the first city where a statue of Ataturk was erected. The Statue of Ataturk in Sarayburnu, ordered by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İstanbul Şehremaneti) to Austrian sculptor Heinrich Krippel, was opened in an official ceremony on October 3, 1926 after more than a year of construction. In addition to depicting Atatürk in civilian clothes, the statue has an exceptional place in the history of the Republic in terms of the location in which it was built. The most important feature of the work, which differs from other monuments in Turkey, is that its ideological meaning, rather than its ceremonial nature, has come to the fore. This article aims to reveal the process of the construction of the Statue of Ataturk in Sarayburnu, which continues to decorate Istanbul from the date of its opening to the present day, and its importance in terms of the history of the Republic. The main sources of the article are newspapers of that period and copyrighted works related to the subject were used.
