Abstract
This study aimed to examine the nationalist processes through which Serbia gained its independence in 1878, and the effects of these processes on the collapse of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The Serbian nationalist movement, centered around the idea that Serbs had lost their independence and freedom since the First Kosovo War is an example of separatist and ethnic nationalism. The Serbian nationalist movement, which does not hesitate to mobilize the masses to conquer the lands of Greater Serbia, dragged the people into war, and brought Yugoslavia’s end. In this study, the historical evolution of the conflict situation called Balkanization in light of conceptual framework of ethnic and territorial nationalisms was discussed. The post-Yugoslavian situation was analyzed in the context of these concepts with special emphasis on Serbian nationalism. As a result, the need to seek a way out of Balkanization, without ignoring the existence of ethnic cores was underlined.
