Abstract

The presence of extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) among 121 Gram negative bacilli isolated from hospitalized patients as infectious agents, was investigated with double disc synergy method. ESBL was positive in 19 (46.34 %) of 41 Klebsiella pneumoniae, in 11 (26.19 %) of 42 Escherichia coli, in 13 (46.42 %) of 28 Enterobacter aerogenes, in 12 (48.0 %) of 10 Enterobacter cloacae strains. Carbapenems were found to be the most effective antimicrobials against Gram negative bacilli, which were followed by aminoglycosides and kinolones. All strains were susceptible to sulbactam-cefoperazone.
