Abstract

To detect the prevalence of refractive errors and other eye pathologies among primary school students in Van province. This descriptive study was conducted between May 2000, and June 2000 in Van City Center. A sample of 510 students from randomly selected two schools was included in the study. Eye examinations were performed in the schools by the family physicians. The students having any ocular pathology were referred to eye specialists. Statistical analysis was performed with Mann-Whitney U and Chi-square tests. Of the 510 students who were examined 40% were female and 60% were male. The prevalence of eye problems was 24%, refractive errors were 12.8%, strabismus was 3.1%, ptosis was 0.4%, and other eye problems were 2.4%. The prevalence of refractive errors in both eyes was 51%, in left eye was 26% and in right eye was 23%. Ninety two percent of the subjects were not in touch with eye care services until the time of survey. Of the diagnosed cases as refractive errors, strabismus and amblyopia were distributed in both gender similarly (P>0.05). Preschool vision screening is so important for the early detection and prevention of vision-threatening ocular conditions.
