Abstract

Gaziler Ovacığı is an important region for the tradition of dervishes. The concept of ‘dervish’ or ‘eren’ is very common in the region. These figures have been transmitting the tradition of Alevi culture by reinterpreting the major themes. One of the representatives of such figures is named as Biçare (deprived, poor) who is from the village named Dağsaray in Mecitözü district of Çorum. Biçare is the folkloric nickname of the dervish in question, whose real name is Mehmet, and he is recognized with his nickname in the villages. According to the data obtained from the collected works, Kul Fakir, another dervish who lived in the same region, were his guide. Biçare were a blind dervish who had lost his eyes when he was seven years old. He has several lyrical poems memorized by many people in the region. Apart from these poems, he spontaneously performed lyrical chantings about his poetry. Although his exact birthdate is unknown, it is commonly accepted that he lived during the period between the birth of the new Turkish Republic and the end of the Ottoman Empire. He has been playing an important role in terms of accepting the foundation of the New Republic with other saints who lived in the same period. His lyrical poetries and the narratives about his exceptional position have been inherited through the non-written culture until today. There have been various compiled works about Biçare. Some of these texts are printed, while the others have been kept in the notebooks of local dervishes and poets. In this article, these documents will be revealed by comparing his poetry to others, documenting related texts, presenting a relevant field study based on a scientific methodology. This article will also help us to understand another figure from Gaziler Ovacığı tradition and to record his works from public memory to the written records.
