Abstract

Horizontal curves used in highway and railway transportation systems constitute critical points of routes. An important point to increase comfort throughout the route and ensure safety is the determination of the minimum curve radius. In the design stage of the horizontal geometry of a route, radii that are smaller than predefined values must not be used. For this reason, the minimum curve radius is one of the most important limit values that have to be considered in design. This value can be calculated based on the limit values of superelevation, lateral acceleration, sight distance and rate of change of lateral acceleration. In this study, as a criterion of comfort in the evaluation of route geometry, the rate of change of acceleration was used to compute the minimum curve radius. Then, calculated values were compared to the values calculated according to other criteria to determine the most suitable curve radius for road-vehicle dynamics to ensure comfortable and safe transportation. According to the results of several comparisons made at various speeds, forms and charts, the best criteria that can be used at different project speeds were determined, and the use of horizontal curve values computed for these criteria was recommended.
