Abstract

The success of orthodontic treatments is based on the principle of maintaining the anchor in accordance with the purpose, with appropriate treatment and anchorage planning. Therefore, anchorage is the most important element that makes the difference in a successful orthodontic treatment. Anchorage is the resistance of the surrounding tissues and extraoral tissues to be determined by the dentist against the reaction forces against unwanted tooth movements. Since anchorage control also significantly affects the stability after orthodontic treatment, different anchoring philosophies have been put forward by many researchers from past to present. In addition to orthodontic strength, anchorage can be affected positively or negatively by many factors related to teeth and/or surrounding tissues such as condition of the periodontium, bone age, density, intra-jaw and inter-jaw contact surfaces, axial tilt of teeth, facial skeleton type, muscular configuration and muscular forces. Therefore, it is extremely important to make individual plans for the installation and protection of the anchor. This article aims to present the anchor concept and the usage methods of anchor systems.
