Abstract
On the frieze of the Trysa Heroon, as often ascertained by the researchers, several sculptors were active. The quality the frieze of the north and east sides of the Heroon of Trysa was often remarked in older research and was called, for instance, “run meter”, “spontaneous composition” or as a “frieze in the so-called style”. The hunting and centaur frieze of the north and east side show another style and a different composition, a less dense figure arrangement and a lower relief depth than the friezes of the west and south sides of the Heroon. In case of precise consideration, these friezes turn out to be an independent composition which takes into consideration the contents of the depiction, the number of the involved figures and the height of the frieze plates. In the paper it is tried to show that large compositions with low number of figures involved are observed on numerous monuments and on the frieze of the Heroon they are to be understood as an expression of the variety of sculptural drafts. The sculptor of the north side had to take into consideration, in addition, the sharply decreasing height of the plates, which he was possibly not informed during the manufacture of the drafts. The theme, that is, the content of a depiction played a significant role and an artist was regarded successful if he could place contents persuasively in the desired picture form. With regard to the frieze of the Heroon’s north side one can ascertain a creation rich in variations of the figures which are taken absolutely not only from “pattern books” or patterns, but also reflect independent compositions by the executing sculptor.
