Abstract

For every level and age category of amateur or formal education, instrument teaching should be performed by teachers who are both wise in musical performance and knowledgeable in how to teach the instrument in detail. Although it has a theoretical aspect, instrument teaching is rather based on practice, and is also a serious setup for the teacher to improve his/her musical knowledge, culture, instruction and performance skills. In that sense, an instrument lesson embodies a sophisticated and complex structure with its technical, musical, collective, demonstrative and daily routine intervening requirements. Playing an instrument is a long lasting, difficult and perfectionist skill. Only a teacher who is really a master of both performance and teaching can be a real role-model for his/her student. For this reason, instrument teaching staff of the institutions which educates music teachers should be musically talented and technically musically qualified, so that they can provide the music teacher candidates with fundamental technical and musical concepts. Success of a student in learning an instrument is mostly dependent on his/her teacher's virtuosity in playing that instrument, and his/her teaching skills, since the teacher would be a role-model for the student. In that sense, although it seems to be a traditional approach within our modern interpretation of education, it would not be wrong to say that master-apprentice model, together with its humanistic and social aspects, will be valid in instrument teaching for a long time.
