Abstract
Ikhwan al-Safa took mathematics as the basis of their philosophy. They started the writing of treatises written in an eclectic style, especially with number and geometry treatises. Ikhwan al-Safa community, who is known to have been highly influenced by Pythagoras, also dealt with other fields of science with numbers and relations between numbers when the occasion arises. This community, which followed a purification method with philosophy, emphasized the necessity of starting it with mathematics. Ikhwan al-Safa stipulated a certain level of cognitive readiness to think about philosophical and mathematical objects. This community gives a message to its reader with numbers and relations between numbers: The universe did not come into existence by chance, but in a mathematical harmony. According to them, the reader can find it in astronomy, music and natural sciences through numbers and the relations between them. This community has received intense criticism for attaching mystical meanings to numbers and relations between numbers. On the other hand, it is possible to encounter epistemological, ontological and cosmological aspects in the Ikhwan’s approach to mathematics in terms of accepting the potential existence of numbers as mathematical objects in human soul, associating existence with numbers and explaining the universe with numerical relations.
