Abstract

Surrealism, a movement that emerged in the troubled atmosphere of the period between the First and Second World War, which deeply affected the human and cultural foundations of today's society, is the reflection of the existing reality to works of art in surreal and fantastic forms. There is a tremendous similarity between the work interpretation practice of the mentioned art movement and the surrealistic transmission of the culture and age of myths. The myths formed because of the phenomenon of existence and belief, which date almost to the post-cognitive revolution period, have been the subject of aesthetic forms with the understanding of art formed in the process. Although styles and understandings have changed, the widespread use of mythological elements has continued. The most prominent among all myths are the myths of Ancient Greece, from which today's literature, visual and plastic arts are often fed. An important part of this culture, the Minotaur is seen as one of the most popular figures of the Surrealist movement. Within the scope of the study, the effect of mythological elements and Minotaur image in plastic arts since the emergence of Surrealism has been discussed. In this context, the works of Giorgio de Chirico, Max Ernst, Salvador Dali and specifically Pablo Picasso, André Masson, Óscar Domínguez, Beth Carter and ceramic artists Jeremy Clark, Aziz Baha Örken and R. Tan Buğra Özer, who used the Minotaur in their works, were examined.
