Abstract

Mythological images have been the subject of many artists’ paintings throughout history. “Golden Age” series of Taner Ceylan reconstructs mythological characters of the ancient world by transferring them to different contemporary scenes. The artist’s “Golden Age” series consists of paintings and sculptures depicted with different materials and techniques. “Persephone”, “Cyparissus” and “Divine Ego” paintings are decisive both in terms of the way the story is handled and in terms of having similar formal and technical features. The aim of this article is to examine the use of mythological and iconographic images in these three paintings of the artist, which differdistinctly from other works in the “Golden Age” series, in terms of formal, conceptual and symbolic aspects. While examining the relationship between the works of the artist and the works of art belonging to different historical periods that deal with the same mythological and iconographic stories, the general stylistic features of the artist’s other works were also taken into consideration. These works, in which the stories of Ancient Mythology and symbols of Christian Iconography take place in Ceylan’s pictorial attitude, are also interesting in terms of the use of mythological images and iconographic symbols in today’s painting.
