Abstract

Borehole imaging tools can provide continuous and detailed observations of rock formation properties. These tools have been developed to identify sedimentological and structural features down to a few millimeters in resolu-tion. There are two types of imaging techniques in use today, based on resistivity and acoustic sensors. The acoustic images enable the identification of borehole breakouts, vugs, and fractures over the full circumference of the bore-hole, whereas resistivity images provide information on small laminations, faults and fractures with more limited borehole coverage. Borehole image data from the Barrel Springs 7-22 well, located in the Washakie Basin of south-central Wyoming, were used to determine structural and sedimentological features with the two imaging techniques. The discrepancies between the results were explained based on the differences in the measuring principles. A stress interpretation was performed using borehole breakout and drilling induced fracture information defined by acoustic images. Acoustic images showed that there are four different borehole breakout zones, but resistivity images did not indicate these features. The borehole breakout direction is N76°E and the strike azimuth of the drilling induced fractures is N22°W. Cumulative dip and dip azimuth vector plots indicate that there are three inflection points which correspond to slumps, cross beds, scoured surfaces, possible faults or unconformities. These plots also indicate that the beds generally dip to the west. Paleocurrent analysis for the Dad Sandstone Member of the Lewis Shale showed SE to NW directions. Based on paleocurrents and the mapping of sand lobes, paleo-slope direction appeared to be to the southeast.
