Abstract
Monte Carlo is the collective name given to techniques that deal with random numbers for solving the problems of experimental mathematics. The methods have evolved from simple numerical integration schemes to modern simulation techniques by which computationally intensive Bayesian inference methods of modern statistical theory become more practical and routinely applied. Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) is one of the risk analysis method the others being sensitivity method, method of moments and exact algebraic solutions. This practical method is preferred and widely used in petroleum industry because its outcome rep-resents the risk better than the other methods. MCS is a stochastic model that uses the probability distribution of each independent random variable and generates the probability distribu-tion of the dependent variable (outcome) instead of just one value. Two major applications of MCS in the petroleum exploration are: Calculation of field size (reserve) distribution and the corresponding economic value. The probability distribution of any variable used in the calculation of the probability distribution of reserve such as porosity, water saturation and recovery factor can be estimated by MCS.
