Abstract
In the literature, it is proved that grooved pipe models are thermally more efficient than the smooth pipe model. Some kinds of groove geometries (rectangular, trapezoidal, circular etc.) were compared both experimentally and numerically, eventually circular grooved pipe model gave the best results by means of heat transfer co efficient. Studies dealing with the internal flow were concerned with constant-section groove geometries and total heat transfer was investigated whereas local effects were ignored. In this study, the effects of variations in groove radius and the gap between adjacent grooves on local heat transfer coefficients were investigated by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method and optimization studies were also performed in terms of heat transfer. The grooved section consists of three sub-sections to see the effects of groove dimension in stream wise flow direction. Each section includes five grooves with constant radius in each one. We vary the radius of circular grooves parametrically in each section to optimize the local groove radius throughout the pipe. We couple the fluid flow (1200<Re<24000) with energy equations, and the grooved sections are set as heated wall at constant temperature of 350 K. The optimal mesh has been selected by performing mesh independence study and finer mesh has been used in heated wall section. The radii of grooves are varied from 2 to 6 mm with an increment of 0.2 mm considering the manufacturability of the pipe, to do so we use the design of experiments (DOE). All DOE tools in ANSYS software are examined and compared with full factorial results. After DOE process, local heat transfer coefficient values of all groove parts are examined by response surface method ology (RSM). In addition, in the Mathematica program, an objective function which describes the problem is formed by studies with multiple nonlinear regression models. An optimization code has been performed as the radii of the grooved sections are design variable, the local heat transfer coefficients are the system outputs and the manufacturability limits are constraints. We observed and detected that the scenarios in which the local heat transfer coefficients in the grooved sections are maximum has been obtained at the intermediate groove radii values, therefore, backward-forward effects are an inevitable part of the local heat transfer studies.
