Abstract
This study employed the Taguchi method and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to design a plate heat exchanger (PHE) for heat recovery devices using low-cost and recyclable materials to meet ventilation requirements at small capacities. The fresh air-flow rate (50-200 m3 /h) required for a small residential building inhabited by three to four people was taken into account to determine the dimensions of the PHE. The variables for the three-level Taguchi analysis were channel height, number of divided sub-channels, average air velocity, and plate material. A three-dimensional CFD model was designed to evaluate the channel inlet-outlet effects of hot and cold (stale and fresh) air streams. Thermal effectiveness is a performance parameter in Taguchi analysis defined as the ratio of recovered thermal power on the fresh side to the maximum thermal power that can be transferred. Thermal effectiveness was also calculated from the CFD model solution using optimum design parameters. The difference between the estimated (Taguchi) and numerical (CFD) thermal effectiveness was 2,42%. A sufficient flow rate was supplied for the fresh air requirement (~105 m3/h) of the dwelling with the optimum design of the PHE. The average air velocity on the PHE channels, the total pressure drop through the PHE, and the recovered thermal power on the fresh side were 2 m/s, ~30 Pa, and ~330 W (~7.9 kW-h/day), respectively, for the optimum PHE design.
