Abstract

The Konya Mawlana Museum is a long‐standing museum housing and containing invaluable handwritten works along with other works of art crafted from such materials as wood, stone, metals, cloth and glass. Among the collections existing in the museum, the volumesin the museum handwritten works library are of great importancein being displayed in the museum. Three of the volumes in this collection have compositions with figures which can rarely befound in the art of binding and publications. Brown, black and claretred leather were used forthe cases of these literary works, thetitles of which are Divan, Mesnevi and Mecmu. The figurative decorations on the cases were made with the technique of cold pattern pressure by pressing with patterns. The outer covers were embroidered with cold binding and mulemma, and the inner covers were embroidered with thetechnique of kat‘ı. The ornamentation compositions of the outer covers are composed of picturing diverse figures in their natural settings. Along with the figures, geometric and vegetable decorations as well asscripts are used on these covers. Decorations of vegetable are dominant on the inner covers. With all these characteristics, the bindingsreflect thefeatures of the 15th century.
