Özet
II.
Abstract
The Second Constitutional Era was an era of transition from subjects to citizens. In this context, especially in civics and history textbooks, several statesmen, military commanders, artists and scientists were introduced as heroes to maintain the ideal citizen type‐ to the students. In this era, the Sultans who were reformers or great conquerors or the people who contributed to the Constitutional Revolution were in the lead among the hero types. Nevertheless one can refer to three hero types: Military commanders‐statesmen, artists and scientists. These three groups come into prominence as hero types in the early Republican era as well. On the other hand, the Ottoman Sultans were no more in the lead as heroes. Just, Mustafa Kemal after the foundation of the republic appeared as an unrivalled heroic figure for the Turkish youth. Several important people of the preOttoman Turkish history also took their places as heroes in the new narrative. While transformation of hero‐types takes root from the differences of two regimes and two state formations; similarities are related to modernist aims and rising nationalist tendencies.
