Abstract

The aim in this study is to examine history teaching as well as History course books of primary schools in the late period of Ottoman Empire and early period of Turkish Republic. The method of the study is historical method. Documents acquired from Ottoman and Republican Archives, and History course books from Turkish Historical Society and National Library were analyzed with the method of document analysis. There were both continuity and disengagement between Ottoman Empire and Turkish Republic in the modernization process in terms of education as well as a number of other fields. History lesson, which began to be taught at primary schools in 1869 with “Maarif‐i Umumiye Nizamnamesi”, focused on the Royal Family, Ottoman Empire and Islam in the reign of Abdulhamid. However, with the reign of Committee of Union and Progress, formal ideology in History course books began to change. In the period of Committee of Union and Progress, the concept of royal family centered history began to be abandoned. From this period on, the concept of history in Turkey shaped as an objection to the history concept of West that was trying to exclude Turks from the modern civilization. Thus, the most important feature of the period was that it was the time that the “Turks”, within the scope of a nation state paradigm ‐ began to take the stage as an agent.
