Abstract

The first census conducted in 1831 wasfollowed by thesecond one in 1844. During that time, both censuses were executed successfully in Beyşehir which was a town centre belonging to thestate of Karaman. From the notebooks kept according to thesettlement area, it is possibleto see the number of the villages of this district. During both censuses, it may beseen that Beyşehir which consisted of 35 settlement areas didn’t encounter any changesin its borders for a long time. Considering the borders of thetown during thefirst half of the nineteenth century, Beyşehir was stuck between thelake on the west and the mountains on the east and is divided into two sections such as coastal area and inner area in terms of geography. It wasrecognized that the people out of the Beyşehir districtstayed away from the coast and settled in theinland area. Sincethe agricultu‐ ral area is very limited, labour migration started in theinner regions which can’t feed theincrea‐ sing population towardsthe West, especially İzmir and İstanbul. This custom which was called “going to ahar(other place)” became common all overthe district. In the first stage of this study, the settlement areas and population of the Beyşehir district were determined according to the census of 1831 and 1844 and the city was mapped. Then, vectoral values were given on the map according to the size of thesettlement areas and population distribu‐ tions of Beyşehir district were shown forthe years 1831 and 1844. In the second stage of the study, the changes occurred in the population distributions during the 13 years between two censuses were considered and the effects of the custom of “going to ahar” on population and population distribution were analysed. Consequently, it was concluded that the increase of population in Beyşehir district is higher than the average value of the country despite the dense level of labour migrations observed in theregion. For that reason, the district Beyşehir was a perfectsource of human for both the newly established army and big citiessuch as İzmir and İstanbul in the first half of the nineteenth century
