Abstract

Book binding, which occupies an important place in arts related to books and which we can call “the garment of a book”, is the first product we come face to face when we hold a book written by hand. In this respect, it is also the first indicator of the artistic quality of such a book. The general absence of the signatures by the binders leads to an obscurity as to on what date and in which city the binding was made. Let alone the book bindings, since there is no information about the place and date in a great majority of the works that have a record of the scribe and to which the binding is tied, it isn’t clear where these works were written and to which state it belonged. Although such obscurities make it difficult to make an exact decision as regards where the whole book or the book binding was produced, they don’t pose an obstacle for making certain deductions. In this article, based on strong assumptions, we have tried to assign a position and an identity to certain bindings in a historical process. In this context, we scanned “the Library of Hand‐Written Works Worthy of a Museum” located within the Konya Mevlana Museum and specified that 149 bindings belong to the Ottoman Period. We painstakingly examined the information in the scribe and waqf records of these works. Consequently, judging from their waqf dates or the information about their calligraphers, we have made it clear that nine Ottoman bindings were made in Konya. Belonging to the classical and late period, these bindings were embellished mostly with geometrical figures and floral compositions with the help of the techniques of inlaying, cold pattern press, cold binding, separating at the bottom, multicolor, zilhabar, scribing and yekşah.
