Abstract
By means of the GAP project, which aims to improve irrigation and agricultural capacity of the Southeast Anatolian region of Turkey, it is expected to have a significant change in cotton picture of the country. In Turkey, who is the 6th biggest cotton producer in the World, the recent figures indicate that cotton production is shifting from west to the southeast parts confirming the expectation mentioned above. As it is well known. Agean cotton is always believed to have superior properties compare to the other regions of the country and priced accordingly. However, it is possible to have a change in fibre properties as well as production pattern by the GAP project. This is especially important f or the current cotton pricing policy. In this research work, we examined the physical properties of cotton samples of known varieties taken from 19 different regions of the country. The samples were tested on Uster HVI Spectrum for their fibre properties. The test results indicate that ome of the GAP cottons have better fibre properties compare to the Agean cottons tested. However, in southeast parts, cottons are found as quite dirty so an improvement in picking and ginning techniques is needed in this region for cleaner cottons.
