Abstract
Ozone is a very effective UV absorber in the UV-B region. However the reduction on this layer has led to the increase of the UV-radiation level reaching the earth's surface and also the risks of the negative effects of sunlight. Excessive ex-posure of UV radiation can result in skin damages such as sunburn, skin again, allergies, skin cancer etc. Thus it becomes more important to protect skin f rom such damages today. This protection could be achieved by avoiding exposure to the sunlight, applying sunscreen lotions or wearing UV protective clothing. Thin untreated cotton, silk, polyamide and poliacrylonitrile fabrics offer sun protection factors (SPF) in the range of 3 to 5. This level of UV protection should be cosidered as insufficient. UV protection ability of textiles is dependent on the type, thickness, porosity, dimensional stability, elastic properties and structure of the textile and as well as on the dyes, optical whitening agents and UV absorber which is present in the fabric. It is possible to produce high performance textiles having UV protection by means of the proper fiber selection and suitable properties like thickness, structure and with a specific finishing process. Particularly the finishing processes which are being applied with UV absorbers are accepted as the most effective methods.
