Abstract

Throughout history architecture has been the concreteexpression of the relations between nature and culture. Thehistorical depth of Anatolia provides substantial evidenceconcerning architectural history. The cultural histories ofAnatolia, the Mediterranean Basin and Eurasia are profoundlyaffected by the relations between nomadic and sedentarycommunities. The role of the nomadic communities incultural and architectural history has not received enoughattention because in general historiography is produced fromthe perspectives of sedentary cultures. This study tries to complete above-mentioned missing parts ofcultural history and accounts for the environmentalcongruence of spatial production through the exemplarysection between the Mediterranean coast and the TaurusMountains in Southwestern Anatolia. In this scope theproduction and configuration processes of the nomadic tentsby the Yeni OsmanlıYörük tribe are taken as an example. Inorder to derive general patterns of spatial production in thissemi-nomadic culture, this study explores the construction ofthe tents through traditional weaving techniques andinterprets this process in terms of culture-nature relations.
