Abstract

Objectives: It was aimed to research pulmonary func tions of sedentary males and athletes who engaged in dif ferent individual sports branches in the same age group. Methods: 50 male athletes in 15-16 age group in the star category participated from each of the branches of judo, athletics, wrestling, taekwondo, table tennis and swim ming and 50 sedentary males participated as well; being in total 350 subjects. Among respiratory functions tests; vital capacity (VC), forced vital capacity (FVC) and maxi mum voluntary ventilation (MVV) values were measured. Results were compared. Results: As a result of measurement, VC values of wres tlers, swimmer and taekwondo athletes were significantly higher than the values of sedentary males in statistical size (p<0.05 and p<0.01). VC values of swimmers were significantly higher than athletes of judo, track and field and table tennis athletes (p<0.01). It was determined that FVC and FEV1 values of swimmers and wrestlers have significantly higher values than sedentary subjects (p<0.05). FVIC values of swimmers were significantly higher than athletes, table tennis players and sedanters (p<0.05 and p<0.01). MVV values of swimmers were sig nificantly higher than judo, track and field and table tennis athletes (p<0.05). When the respiration rate (RR) was an alyzed, RR value of table tennis players were significantly higher than wrestlers (p<0.05). Conclusion: As a result it was determined that respira tory functions were higher among subjects who do ex ercise compared to those who do not. That the respira tory parameters of athletes doing exercise from different branches of star category are higher than those who do not shows the effect of training on respiratory system. In addition to this, the difference of respiratory functions be tween branches shows that the sport branch influences the respiratory capacity.
