Abstract
One of the major objectives of the “Turkish Height System Modernization and Gravity Recovery (2015- 2020)” project coordinated by the General Directorate of Mapping is to recover the national gravity database and improve the Turkish regional gravity field model from terrestrial and airborne gravimetry. Intensive terrestrial gravimetry campaigns have been conducted throughout the country since 2016 by the collaborative works of five national institutions within the project. In the beginning of the fieldworks, a new calibration baseline consisting of two absolute gravity sites with average distance of 20 km apart and gravity ranges up to 210 mGal was constructed in Ankara city. The calibration constants of the relative gravimeters used in the project were updated based upon the observations on the calibration base. A laboratory (TRGrav-Lab), decontaminated from the natural, environmental, and man-made noises, was built. The noise characteristics and the drifts of the gravimeters were monitored at regular intervals in this laboratory. TRGrav-Web portal was set up for the survey teams to upload the daily raw observations along with their metadata at the end of the survey day. A national gravity standardization network (TRGrav-Net) consisting of 11783 sites, 100 of which are absolute points, with a spatial resolution of about 5'x5' were established. The weighed constrained least squares adjustment of the gravity observations reduced for the environmental and instrumental effects resulted in a mean formal error of 35 Gal at TRGrav-Net sites. Gravity densifications at a few kilometers’ spatial resolution over İstanbul, Ankara, Tekirdağ cities and Kırıkkale-Çorum airborne gravimetry test region, islands larger than 1.5 km2 in the Sea of Marmara, Gökçeada, Bozcaada and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus have also been completed during the TRGrav-Net establishment. Lastly, terrestrial gravimetry was performed at the 1757 levelling benchmarks over 7 discrete levelling profiles constructed at different regions in the country for the geoid model validation. The recent terrestrial gravity data have been used for the quality control of the historical data and they have provided to remove the gross errors and discrepancies in the historical gravity datasets. The upwardcontinuation of the densified data in Kırıkkale-Çorum region have been utilized as reference dataset for the airborne gravimetry test studies. The recent terrestrial gravity data acquired until the end of 2020 along with the quality controlled historical gravity data have been used as the major input for the computation of high resolution and accurate Turkish Geoid Model-2020.
