Abstract

Objective: To investigate the effect of posterior vitreous detachment on subfoveal choroidal thickness. Material and Method: Eyes with spontaneous posterior vitreous detachment (Group 1, study group) were included in this prospective and controlled clinical study. The control group (Group 2) was created with the eyes of other patients without posterior vitreous detachment. A complete ophthalmological examination of the eyes was performed. Eyes with retinal or vitreous pathology other than posterior vitreous detachment were excluded from the study. Subfoveal choroidal thickness was measured with the help of optical coherence tomography with enhanced depth imaging technique. Results: Seventy-four eyes of 74 patients were included in the study. There were 37 eyes of 37 patients in both groups. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of age, gender, race, and mean best corrected visual acuity and intraocular pressure values (p>0.05). Mean subfoveal choroidal thickness was statistically significantly thinner in Group 1 than Group 2 (p<0.05). Conclusion: Subfoveal choroidal thickness in eyes with posterior vitreous detachment may be thinner than those without.
