Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study is to examine the effects of the stress coping techniques course on self-efficacy and psychological resilience in first-year nursing students. Material and Methods: The research was conducted in the spring semester of the 2020-2021 academic year with an experimental design that involved pre-test, post-test and a control group. The intervention group consisted of 38 students who took this course, and the control group consisted of 34 students who did not take the course. Stress coping techniques course was given to intervention group students for 2 hours a week during 14 weeks. Data were collected with the descriptive questionnaire form, the Resilience Scale for Adults, and the Self-Efficacy Scale. The analysis was used with a number, percentage, median, min-max, Mann-Whitney U, chi-square test. The significance level was accepted as 0.05. Results: The mean age of the students participating in the study was 19.3±1.0, 84.7% were female and 77.8% had a nuclear family. In the post test, the difference in the Planned Future Subscale of the Resilience Scale for Adults was borderline significant (p=0.053) and the difference in the Social Competence Subscale of the Resilience Scale for Adults was significant (p=0.041) between the intervention and the control group. Conclusion: In the study, it was determined that the stress coping techniques course significantly affected planned future and social competence, which are the two main components of psychological resilience, but did not affect self-efficacy. It is recommended that stress coping techniques course should be included in the curriculum of schools providing nursing education at the national level. It is recommended to conduct experimental studies involving different initiatives to increase psychological resilience and self-efficacy in students.
