Abstract
Objective: To evaluate patients with symptomatic chronic prostatitis by the NIH Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index (CPSI) and to compare differences among subgroups with regard to symptom scores. Methods: Two-hundred symptomatic patients within categories II, III-A and III-B according to the NIH prostatitis classification were evaluated. Patients were questioned with NIH-CPSI. The prostate specific specimens were then examined by microbiological methods. Results: After clinical and microbiological evaluation it was found that 86 patients (43%) were in category II, 9 (4.5%) were in category III-A and 105 (52.5%) were in category III-B groups. These categories were compared according to the CPSI scores of the patients. The categories remained comparable (p> 0.05). There were no significant differences between the symptom scores of married and single patients (p> 0.05). Staphylococcus aureus and Ureaplasma urealyticum were the most commonly isolated bacteria in category II patients. The symptom scores of these patients did not show significant difference according to the agents of infection (p> 0.05). Conclusion: Clinical symptoms are similar among the subgroups of patients with chronic prostatitis. CPSI scores are comparable among all subgroups.
