Abstract
Objective: To investigate the frequency of congenital and acquired urogenital anomalies such as hypospadias, undescended testis, varicocele and history of urogenital surgical operation in young males at the beginning of their military obligation. Methods: This study is a cross-sectional investigation conducted at a military command between March 4 and 28, 2002. A total of 3,625 privates who have just joined the military command were included. During general medical examination of the participants, two urologists performed urogenital examinations and noted their findings. Results: The mean age of the cases was found to be 20.6$\pm$1 .4 years. The incidences of urogenital abnormalities were noted as varicocele, 10.87%; history of any uro-genital surgical operation, 0.68%; undescended testis, 0.38%; and hypospadias, 0.08%. On the other hand, in 8 of the 14 cases (57.1%) with undescended testis the condition was right-sided and 20 of 25 cases (80%) who had undergone a urogenital operation the procedure was a scrotal intervention. Conclusion: The most frequent urogenital problem in this particular group of young adults was found as varicocele. Another interesting point was that some of the congenital problems have not been not treated until the age of 20.
