Abstract
In this study, a different assignment approach is introduced for the transportation problems. While the initial solution is performed by Vogel'ş, Approximation Method (VAM), differences that are comprised only unit transportation cost are considered but the demands of the markets/supplies of production centers are not considered. However the product quantity that jfnarjkets neşd and the capacity of production center are important. It is known that, there are two parameters of totalcost, unit cost and quantity of the product. In this approach, while the initial solution is performed for the transportation problems, both unit transportation cost and demands of the market/supplies of production center are taken into account. A different assignment approach is applied to the solution of the transportation problems by assigning maximum quantity of the product to the cell that has minimum transportation cost in the rows and columns where the multiplication öf the demand of the markets/supply of the production centers and unit transportation cost is maximum. The optimal solution is obtained with equal or less number of iteration using this approach for the solution of the unbalanced transportation problems, especially when the demands of the markets/supplies of production centers are highly different from each other. The approach in this paper is tested on a few different problems and the results are reported.
