Özet

Osmanlı modernleşmesinde ve buna bağlı olarak edebiyatın modernleşmesinde Batılı filozof ve sanatçılardan yapılan tercümelerin rolü büyüktür. Modern Türk edebiyatının kurucularından Ahmet Mithat Efendi de Voltaire, Schopenhauer, J.J. Rousseau gibi Batılı filozof ve sanatçılarla yakından ilgilenmiş, onlardan tercümeler yapmıştır. Bu yazıda J.J. Rousseau'nun Ahmet Mithat Efendi üzerindeki etkisi değerlendirilecektir. Fransız Devrimi'nin müsebbibi olarak görülen Rousseau, Ahmet Mithat Efendi'nin gerek edebî ve fikrî eserlerinde gerekse de gazete yazılarında çeşitli şekillerde atıfta bulunduğu ve etkilendiği bir filozoftur. Hepsinden önemlisi, Rousseu'nun Contrat Social'ini yarım da kalsa bizde ilk tercüme eden Ahmet Mithat Efendi'dir.

Abstract

The role of translation from Western philosophers and artists is great in the process of Ottoman modernisation and within relation to that in the modernisation of Turkish literature. As one of the founders of modern Turkish literature, Ahmet Mithat Efendi closely dealt with literary men and artists such as Voltaire, Schopenhauer, J.J. Rousseau and translated various literary works from them. In this paper, J.J. Rousseau's influence on Ahmet Mithat Efendi will be examined. Regarded as one of the initiators of the French Revolution, Ahmet Mithat Efendi refers to Rousseau's works in his literary and intellectual works, and his articles in newspapers. Most significant of all, though he was not able to complete it, Ahmet Mithat was the first to attempt a translation of Roussaeu's work titled Conrat Social into Turkish
