Abstract
In this study, the new meaning of Servet-i Fünun literature on the elements of the moon and the sun is examined by taking the works of Halit Ziya, Tevfi k Fikret, Mehmet Rauf and Cenap Şehabettin into the center. In Servet-i Fünun literature, both the verse and prose elements of the moon and the sun are constructed with a new perception. The imagination in front of the confl ict between dreams and reality, which is the main problem of the works of this period, corresponds to the imagination of the Moon and Sun, the two focal fi gures of the sky. There are mythological narratives and symbolizations in the subtext of the moon and sun images bearing the characteristics of the fi re element. To the sun; the moon, which receives its light from the sun and whose form varies, produces different connotations and meanings, while its burning and central location in the sky assumes divine features. Moon images; along with the connotations of uncertainty and unreliability, it can also express pollution due to the stained appearance of the moon. When the moon is associated with its yellow color, a negative perception such as malice and illness emerges. On the other hand, the moon images, which are attributed to meanings such as purity and clarity, were originally associated with the concept of mother. Such images based on the union of the moon and water can be read as a romantic expression of the desire to return to the mother. In the descriptions of moonlight, which are frequently mentioned in the literature of Servet-i Fünun, there is also the imagination of a moon in which hopes and desires are revealed in terms of the dream of rising to the sky by combining with water. An affi rmative view of the sun images against the positive and negative representations of the moon; an exaltation of the desired high dreams comes to the fore. As a masculine symbol, the sun is an element that is generally exalted. They represent their ideals, the desire to rise, and are more often associated with authority. Due to its burning feature, it is an element that is both feared and admired. Therefore, it brings about associations with the father fi gure. In Servet-i Fünun’s literature, melancholy, which is evident in the scenes related to the setting of the sun, contains metaphorical references to the loss of the father and the ideals he represents
