Abstract
Zülfü Livaneli is one of the important names of popular Turkish novels in the aftermath of 1980. In the opening pages of his novel named Leyla’nın Evi, he summarizes the history of Istanbul as “the history of people seizing each other’s properties”. In line with this case, the novel narrates the story of Leyla Hanım who is struggling to not to lose Bosnalılar Yalısı (Bosnian Mansion), which she inherited from her family.Leyla, the protagonist, is an old lady who is bred with the Ottoman culture. Being obliged to leave her home, which she used as a shelter for years, and observing the current Istanbul, particularly Beyoğlu, and intense group of young people living there, lead to interesting evaluations. The novel deals with various issues ranging from Armenian conflict to squatting in Istanbul, and from formations of religious groups to night life in Beyoğlu. The reflector of all these issues is the element of space. In this sense, the novel draws attention to changes in Turkish culture, Istanbul, and social structure based on spatial perception. The novel offers a wide array of materials within the scope of reproduction of space or the concept of sentimental value. One of the remarkable elements of the novel is that the author tries to reflect the aforementioned sentimental value mainly from a female perspective. This study seeks to make an in-depth analysis of various materials within the scope of the element of space so as to reveal the author’s way of using these materials and his perspective. Hence, this study aims to make contribution to evaluations on both Livaneli’s authorship and the use of space in Turkish novel tradition
