Abstract
Translation activities supporting the works of art require serious attention in terms of both revealing the source issue by enabling comparative studies and determining the approaches that affect the language positively or negatively. These attentions and interventions can sometimes be done by the state, private institutions or individual enterprises. Considering the studies related to translation activities in Turkey, different methods for the translation of the source language into the target language are focused more, and criticisms are intensifi ed in this direction. Translation history, just like the history of novel, story, poetry and criticism, is important but neglected. Undoubtedly, translation criticism also showed an important development with the translation activities, and a serious translation tradition has been established throughout the history. In this study, Nurullah Ataç’s articles on translation and translation criticism in periodicals have been considered and his thoughts on this issue and his polemics with other authors have been evaluated. With these articles, the active role of Ataç in the translation of the so called Tercüme journal is also revealed. Ataç’s expectation in the early years of the Republic from the translation activities, including himself, is far beyond being aware of the works of another culture and enriching ourselves with them. He is a radical person who largely wants to close the doors to the Turkish history as well as our past. People who see this situation will necessarily move forward and believe in the humanistic teachings of Europe such as the Greek and Latin classics. It is possible to see his activities and the activities of some writers, whom he met at the Tercüme journal, as the continuation of Neo-Greek, which emerged during the Second Constitutional Era, in the Republican period.
