Abstract

The Central Anatolian Fault System, which is the third longest strike-slip fault in Turkey, initiates at the north from Düzyayla (Sivas) and runs through Kayseri, Çamardı (Niğde), Kamışlı, Pozantı and the Gülek Pass where it finally passes through the north of Mersin and reaches Anamur with a trend of N60E. The part of the Central Anatolian Fault Zone (CAFZ) that lies between the east of Gülek and Namrun is called the Namrun Fault Zone. In this study, geological and morphotectonic features of the Namrun segment around Namrun town and its vicinity to the south of the Central Taurides, were investigated. The basement rock is composed of the Cehennemdere formation of Jurassic-Lower Cretaseous age represented by dolomite, dolomitic limestone and limestones. This basement is overlain by the Santonian-Campanian Yavca formation which is composed of sandstone, marl and turbidititic limestones. The Findikpmar melange technically overlies these units in Maas-trichtian. Above mentioned units are unconformably overlies by the Tertiary sediments. These are the Oligo-cene Gildirli formation composed of terrestrial elastics, the Lower-Middle Miocene Kaplankaya formation deposited in a shalow-marine environment and the Lower-Middle Miocene reefal limestones of the Karaisalı formation. The Namrun Fault Zone is represented by a number of fault segments which are N60-80E trending and 4-8 km long. These faults are the Namrun, Çamararası Sebil, Cehennemdere, Alaiye, Tepetaş, Meydan and Çevlik faults. The left lateral offsets on the contact of the Tertiary units and on morphological features, microearthquakes and fault plane solutions suggest that these faults are active sinistral strike slip faults with considerable normal compenents.
