Abstract
The attenuation of the shear (S) wave in the earth's crust and upper mantle in southwest Anatolia is estimated by using the coda wave and coda normalization methods which are based on the decrease of coda wave amplitude in time and distance. These methods depend on the attenuation properties of scattered coda waves in a heterogeneous medium. Seismograms are Butterworth filtered for centre frequencies of 0.75, 1.5, 3.0, 6.0 and 8.0 Hz, and the coda quality factor ($Q_c$) values are computed from the slope of coda wave amplitude decay and S wave quality factor $Q_s$ values are determined from the ratio of S wave and coda wave spectral amplitudes. The Qc values are calculated both as a function of time (30-150 sec) and as a function of frequency (0.75-8.0 Hz),$Q_s$ values are determined as a function of the ratio. The $Q_c$ and $Q_s$ values vary from 18+3 to 658±84 and from 77±4 to 697±86, respectively, in the southwest Anatolian region. The frequency dependence of $Q_c$ is described by 0.886 ± 0.007 and 0.859 ± 0.027 for lapse times of 30 sec and 130 sec respectively, and the frequency dependence of S wave attenuation between 40-160 km epicentral distance is described by 0.996± 0.014.
