Abstract

In the process of education, concept mapping is an education method that aims to offer concrete data to the students by visualizing the relationship between the information and the concepts with a general-to-specific approach and in a hierarchical construct. Concept maps are developed by Novak and Govin (1984) on the basis of Asubel's learning theory. Concepts, concept links, hierarchy, cross-links and patterns are the components of a concept map. Concepts are connected to each other by linking lines (arrows); the concepts are defined in boxes and the type and direction of the relationship between the concepts are written on these arrows. This way, the student can realize the relationship between the concepts clearly and determine the aspects that must be developed. There are four main types of concept maps: Hierarchy concept map, spider concept map, systems concept map and flowchart concept map. Concept maps are used for summarizing a subject, preparing assignments, reports and presentations and in clinical practices. Concept maps offer several advantages. They prevent the student from the habit of memorizing information without comprehending it, they help the student to earn the talent of analyzing and synthesizing the vast amount of information received, they contribute to the arrangement of information in the student's mind, they assure the persistence of the new information in the long-term memory by relating it with the old information and last but not least they improve critical thinking. The nature of concept mapping to be time-consuming at the beginning and the need to draw a map a couple of times in order to establish the concepts properly are the disadvantages of the method. Nursing instructors may encourage the use of concept maps and contribute to the preparation of efficient concept maps by reserving adequate time for this assignment. Concept maps are evaluated according to criteria such as, comprehension of the significant information by the student in a thorough and detailed manner, the arrangement of the concepts from general to specific and the appropriateness of the relationships between the concepts. In the first quarter of the 21st century, concept mapping, like many student- centered methods used in all disciplines will take its place in nursing education.
