Abstract
Staphylococci are an important group of bacteria from medical point of view as they can cause a wide variety of infections both in our country and in the world. In this study, bacteriological studies were conducted on raw milk samples of Atatürk Forest Ranch Dairy on different time intervals and 38 staphylococci were isolated. On these colonies, gram staining, hemolysis, pigment formation, coagulase, catalase, urease, mannitol, sucrose, mannose, maltose, arginine tests and novobiocine sensitivity tests were applied. All colonies were found to be catalase positive, beta and nonhemolytic groups were observed. No pigment formation other than the yellow pigment of S. aureus was observed. S. saprophyticus and S. cohnii were found to be resistant to novobiocine while the remaining colonies were sensitive. These data indicate that 7 of the 38 isolations are S. aureus and 31 are coagulate negative staphylococcus (S. simulans, S. intermedius, S. epidermidis, S. cohnii and others). This study once again stresses on the importance of milk pasteurization and the necessity of the consumption of pasteurized milk products, as staphylococci can cause serious clinical outcomes.
