Abstract
In this study, the advantages and limitations of SPP on canine tracheas considering clinic, radiographie and postmortem findings were evaluated. Twenty-four native healthy dogs were assigned equally and at random to control group (CG) and spiral group (SG), of which the latter group dogs were used for SPP application. Both CG and SG dogs were also divided into a short term (10 days) subgroup (SSG) and long term (3 months) subgroup (LSG) according to the length of the follow-up period. In SG, postoperative complications like inflammation (63.6 %), swelling (clinic 27.2 % and subclinic 72.7 %), short and intermittent type of coughing (36.4 %) and dyspnoea (18.2 %) were determined. Dyspnoea, the most serious postoperative complication, was found in two dogs, one (9.1 %) at rest and another (9.1 %) during exercising. In radiography, diameters of the trachéal lumens of SG dogs were found to decrease between 6.7-85.3 %. Development of dyspnoea at rest and during exercise required a decrease of trachéal lumens by 85.3 and 63.5 %, respectively. Although SPP were cheaply available, easily prepared and readily applied on the canine tracheas, the adjustment of their right sizes was difficult and their resistance to the shrinking force of the adventitial connective tissue appeared to be lower.
