Abstract
In this article it has been aimed to explain the intraosseous fluid administration technique which is an alternative method in fluid therapy, to pass on its advantages and disadvantages to practical work. The material of the study comprised of 15 mongrel dogs who had excessive loss of fluid due to haemorragic gastroenteritis and who were unable to be catheterised intravenously due to hypovolemic shock. The intraosseous administration was carried out in the proximal medial aspect of the tibia in all cases. The medullar cavitiy was entered under finger pressure while the angle between the 22 gauge sterile syringe canuia and tibia was 30 degree. An appropriate infusion set was attached to the canula and body heat solutions of Dextrose 5 %, Isolyte and Isotonic were given at a rate of 10 ml/min. The puppies were observed before and after infusion for their general condition, skin elasticity and fullness of the peripheral blood vessels. Advantages and disadvantages of place and convenience of administration, canuia stabilisation, fluid administration rate and risk of infection were also evaluated.
