Abstract

In the present study, the effect of X-ray irradiation on blood testesterone concentration, sperm parameters and histopathological changes in testis of male rabbits were invastigated. In this study, ten male New Zealand rabbits were used. Blood samples were collected from all expe¬rimental animals before exposure to X-ray for detection of blood testosterone concentration as control. The ex¬perimental rabbits were divided into two groups of five. Rabbits in the first group were exposed to X-ray di¬rectly; the other group were exposed to x-ray indirectly by keeping them in an enviroment that has 500 Rad X-ray irradiation for 40 days. Blood samples were taken from experimental animals in 20th and 40th days of ex¬periment for detection of testosterone. Additionally, se¬men samples were also collected from all animals befo¬re and after experiment. Testes were also examined his-topathologically after experiment. In both groups tes¬tosterone concentrations decreased significantly ( P < 0.05 ), 20 days after the study, and concentration of tes¬tosterone became undetectible 40 days after the experi¬ment ( P < 0.001 ). Again, in both groups the amount of ejeculate, motility and concentration of spermatozoon decreased compared to the control values and also the number of abnormal spermatozoon rate increased after exposure to radiation. In all experimental animals, spermatogenesis phase de¬fects were observed after histopathological examination. Degeneration after primer spermatocytes phase and ger-minatif epitel tissue loss were also observed histopatho-logically in both groups of rabbits. It can be concluded that long term exposure of animals to x-ray irradiation has a negative effect on blood testos¬terone concentration and on the quality of sperm and al¬so can cause histopathological degeneration in their tes- tıs.
