Özet

In this study, it was aimed to investigate the pathological effects of a polypropylene prosthesis on the canine tracheas. Here, 6 control and 12 experimental group dogs were used. Experimental group dogs were divided equally into spiral group and ring groups according to the shapes of the prostheses used. Additionally, all dogs were allocated postoperatively to short term subgroup (SSG) (10 days) and long term subgroup (LSG) (Smonths) to determine the differentiation of pathological changes in time. Following euthanasia, the cervical tracheas of these dogs were removed affld from each trachea! segment four transversal section^ were prepared. Later, they were examined regarding to the complications such as inflammation, degeneration and necrosis. It was determined that the degrees of these complications varied from mild to severe and their mean values were higher in ring and spiral groups than control group. In addition, the severity of these complications in experimental group dogs non-significantly reduced (p>0.05) in PSG as compared to SSG. Although these complications appeared to persist, they were not progressive and caused no respiratory distress. Histopathologically, no significant difference was also found between the different shapes of polypropylene prostheses. These results show that polypropylene prosthesis can be a useful material for reconstructing the canine trachéal collapse.

Abstract

Several different surgical methods have been suggested for the reconstruction of the trachéal collapse (TC) in dogs (5, 6, 10, 15). These methods include the plication of dorsal trachéal membrane (2, 9, 13), trachea! ring chondrotomy (1, 11), intraluminal prosthesis (8, 12, 16, 17, 20,) and extraluminal prosthesis (5, 6, 7, 16). Recent studies (4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 22) have shown that extraluminal prosthesis is the most appreciable technique for the reconstruction of the TC. Extraluminally, a number of materials such as nylon, teflon and polypropylene with several different shapes including partial ring, total ring, tube and spiral have been used (3, 8, 18, 19). Among these methods, spiral polypropylene prosthesis is now believed to be the most suitable one for the TC treatment (6, 10). In this regard, Coyne et al (5) conducted a study considering clinical, radiological and pathological parameters within very limited follow-up period. A pilot study conducted by the present authors showed marked pathologic changes in the trachéal tissue, which were not transit in short period as noted by Coyne et al (5). Nelson (15) has also noted that the information on spiral polypropylene prosthesis is insufficient to justify its superiority over other techniques. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to undertake a thorough pathological investigation to determine not only short but also prolonged effects of the prosthesis on the canine trachea. In addition, this study used two different types of polypropylene prosthesis to detect the presence of any pathological differences between different shapes.
